Alabama Theatre Blade Sign

Alabama Theatre

Alabama Theatre

THE STORY

The Alabama Theatre is a gorgeous movie palace located in the heart of Birmingham's entertainment district. This cinema was once flanked on both sides by two, large, matching blade signs. Built alongside the theatre in 1927, these signs greeted visitors from their respective vantages on 3rd Ave N and 18th St N. However, in 1950 both signs were removed, and later in 1957 only the 3rd Ave N sign was replaced.

After 60 long years, Formula Design was tasked with redesigning the long-lost twin to the 3rd Ave N blade sign. This was not a simple task considering the original plans were nearly a century old and the remaining sign had endured decades of wear, maintenance, and minor renovations which had altered it from original specifications. Through a combination of field surveys and examinations of the historic documents Formula was able to develop plans to recreate the sign with modern construction methods.

The sign has long been a local Birmingham icon, and to commemorate its return the new sign was unveiled as the centerpiece of a 2018 New Year celebration. At the stroke of midnight, the newly restored landmark illuminated the theatre district's streets, which had filled with cheering crowds gathered to witness its return.
